Monterey County allows schools to apply for waivers to hold in-person classes

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) Monterey County reports that as of today, the county is eligible to allow schools to apply for waivers to open for in-person instruction.

Monterey County is now below the threshold set by the state.

The county said some districts have already submitted applications, and they are under consideration. Any other schools interested can now begin the application process. The waivers only apply for grades TK-6.

Schools will not be allowed to reopen county-wide until it has been in the red tier of the state's "Blueprint for a Safer Economy" for at least two weeks.

Five San Benito County schools have been approved for waivers to reopen, and Santa Cruz County has been in the red tier for more than two weeks, so schools are allowed to reopen.
