SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION and KPIX) The Santa Cruz Seaside Company announced that it is laying off about a third of its full-time workers at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk due to financial issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many of the boardwalk's retailers and restaurants are still open, but rides and other attractions have closed. Some attractions reopened in June, but as the number of COVID-19 cases rode statewide, more closures were ordered.

The Santa Cruz Seaside Company told the CBS affiliate in the Bay Area that it has laid off 106 full-time employees.

"As time progressed and the severity of this pandemic has come into sharper focus, so too have the impacts to our business," the company said in a statement.

Santa Cruz County was added to the state's monitoring list last weekend, and as of Tuesday, indoor operations in several business sectors were ordered to close.
