MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) Organizers of the Sea Otter Classic announced that its 2020 event is canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

The event was originally postponed until October, but said that after talking to county health officials, organizers said it became clear that they could not host an event that would meet their health and safety standards.

The Bicycle Leadership Conference is also canceled.

Organizers said they knew it was possible that the event could be canceled, so they created the Sea Otter Play presented by Continental, which they say features more than 350 cycling companies virtually. It is expected to include cycling challenges and fundraising for COVID-19 relief.

The virtual event will be held in September. Ride challenges are set to start Sept. 1, and the festival will be held Sept. 17-20.

Organizers said they will share more information about the cancellation on July 17.
