SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KION) Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that hair salons and barbershops will be allowed to open in some California counties.

The 47 counties that have attested to the state that COVID-19 is under control in their communities are allowed to reopen hair salons and barbershops immediately.

“We’re making progress, we’re moving forward, we’re not looking back but we are walking into the unknown, the untested, literally and figuratively. And we have to be guided by the data that brought us to this place in the first place, and that is guided by these principles of openness and transparency, principles where all of us are required to do a little bit more and a little bit better to make sure we’re protecting against the spread of this virus, particularly again, as we meaningfully reopen the economy and the state,” Newsom said.

San Benito County is one of those that have completed the process.

Eleven counties have not progressed yet, including Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties. They are in the process of putting together documentation for state approval.

Although the businesses are allowed to open statewide, counties may have stricter Shelter in Place orders.

Newsom said the state would provide guidance for reopening summer camps, childcare facilities and schools on Wednesday.

Guidance for nail salons and other personal services are still in the works.

On Monday, Newsom issued guidance for places of worship and announced that in-store retail could reopen with county approval.
