SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk announced that it is canceling its free Friday night concerts this summer.

The cancellation is in response to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because of the pandemic, the boardwalk said its operating hours, special events and promotions will also be subject to change.

Last year, bands that performed at the event included Smashmouth, Everclear, Foghat and Journey's former lead singer Steve Augeri.

The concerts have been held at the boardwalk since 1988.

The dates for free Wednesday night movies on the beach are still to be decided.
