SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KION) Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that California will offer workers' compensation benefits for workers who contract COVID-19 on the job.

The benefits are offered to those who tested positive or were diagnosed by a licensed physician within 14 days after the last day at work, who work outside the home and last worked on or after March 19.

“We are removing a burden for workers on the front lines, who risk their own health and safety to deliver critical services to our fellow Californians, so that they can access benefits, and be able to focus on their recovery,” Newsom said. “Workers’ compensation is a critical piece to reopening the state and it will help workers get the care they need to get healthy, and in turn, protect public health.”

The executive order signed by Newsom is a time-limited rebuttable presumption that will be in place for 60 days.

Newsom also signed an executive order waiving penalties for property taxes paid after April 10 for those who show they are struggling financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic for the next year. Newsom said it will apply to residential properties and small businesses
