MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) United Way Monterey County said its Emergency Food and Shelter Program has received additional funds through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, and it is offering grants to agencies providing services.

The additional funding is in addition to its normal yearly amount of $699,904.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for basic need services, especially food and rental assistance, is rapidly increasing in Monterey County. EFSP funds will help address this need,” said Katy Castagna, President and CEO, UWMC. “With the partnership of the local EFSP board, UWMC will ensure that these funds are distributed fairly and help residents in need of immediate assistance.”

The grants are open to non-profit, faith-based or local government agencies that provide food and shelter services.

Some of the expenses eligible for grants include:

  • Rent or mortgage assistance
  • Food and toiletry purchases
  • Transportation for food banks or pantries
  • Equipment and consumable supplies
  • Transportation for mass shelter or mass feeding
  • Building code repairs
  • Utility assistance
  • ADA facility improvements
  • Mass shelter expenses
  • Mass feeding expenses
