The Santa Cruz Police Department is hosting a virtual presentation to help residents keep their businesses safe from burglars during the Shelter in Place.

Police are expected to talk about how to cut liability risks, apply security tactics, improve environmental design and use best practices to thwart would-be thieves.

"With many companies closed due to COVID-19, cities everywhere are seeing an uptick in commercial burglaries. SCPD has increased patrol enforcement, made arrests, and seen success with Burglar Suppression Units. We are also offering this free webinar to educate the community on crime prevention to protect against commercial burglary," the department said in a statement.

In addition to providing information, Chief Andy Mills is waiving false alarm fees temporarily.

The presentation is expected to start at 3 p.m. Thursday.
