GILROY, Calif. (KION) The City of Gilroy has announced that one of its residents has died of coronavirus-related causes.

The Fire Department was told earlier in the week that two people, a husband and wife in their 80s and 90s, tested positive for the virus, and the wife has since died.

Firefighters who responded to the situation were wearing the required protective equipment and followed protocol, but they have been placed under medical self-monitoring out of an abundance of caution, according to the city.

The city said it expects that there will be more cases of coronavirus in the near future and said everyone plays a role in slowing the spread of the disease. Officials also remind residents that those over the age of 65 and those with chronic health conditions have been asked to isolate themselves at home.

The city said it is evaluating its operations and services to implement social distancing. The city has canceled all non-essential classes and programs, canceled non-essential travel and started holding meetings electronically. The Gilroy Public Library will also be closed until further notice.

For more information about coronavirus, Santa Clara County residents can call 211 or text the word "coronavirus" to 211211 and follow the prompts. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week in 150 languages.
