UCSC alumna wins second Grammy award for Best Folk Album

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) -- An alumna from UC Santa Cruz, Gillian Welch, was the recipient of the Best Folk Album award with musical partner David Rawlings at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on February 2.

They won the award for their "Woodland!" album.

Welch graduated from Porter College in fine arts, class of 1990.

According to UC Santa Cruz, Welch has been dedicated to American folk music for over two decades, with her breakthrough album titled "Revival" released in 1996. At that time, UCSC says that she was also nominated for a Grammy, which set the stage for her career in storytelling through traditional acoustic sounds.

Welch has gone on to release multiple albums, including "Time (The Revelator)" and "Soul Journey."

Her music was also featured in the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

Welch and Rawlings' previously won a Grammy in 2021 for Best Folk Album for their "All the Good Times" cover songs.
