DNA leads to sexual assault arrest in Santa Cruz County
A Brookdale man is behind bars, accused of a sexual assault that happened in January of 2018.
29-year-old Elias Monroy was arrested at his home in Brookdale last week.
Deputies say in January of 2018 a 21-year-old woman was asleep in a vehicle outside her friend’s house on 26th Avenue when a person she did not know, who resided in the area, entered the car and sexually assaulted her.
The victim fought off her attacker and activated her car alarm which caused him to run. Deputies responded but were unable to find the suspect.
The victim participated in a sexual assault examination, which resulted in the collection of evidence which was forwarded to the California Department of Justice for analysis, leading to the DNA identification and arrest of Monroy.
