Officials identify driver killed after truck hit by train on State Route 183
UPDATE 9/26/2019 1:15 p.m. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has identified a woman killed after the produce truck was hit by a train as 50-year-old Isabel Montes of Marina.
CHP said the crash happened at around 1:13 Wednesday afternoon. Investigators believe the truck was traveling northbound on State Route 183 toward Catroville parallel to railroad tracks. The truck turned left across the track and a train hit the truck. It is not clear if the truck stopped before crossing the tracks.
UPDATE 9/25/2019 3:15 p.m. Officials confirm to KION that a female driver died after her truck was hit by a train on State Route 183.
CHP Officer Michael Orta said the crash happened at around 1:13 p.m. on Wednesday. Preliminary statements suggest a flatbed produce truck was traveling northbound toward Catroville parallel to railroad tracks.
The truck turned left across the track and a train hit the truck. It is not clear if the truck stopped before crossing the tracks.
The Union Pacific cargo train was traveling northbound. Nobody on the train was injured, but the female driver of the truck died. The truck nearly hit a house after the crash, and nobody there was injured.
There was a fuel spill as a result of the crash, and crews are working to clean it up.
The CHP is still investigating the crash.
