UN demands end to violence in Haiti, sanctions gang leader

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution demanding an immediate end to violence and criminal activity in Haiti and imposing sanctions on individuals and groups that threaten peace and stability in the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation. It singles out one powerful gang leader. The sanctions were the first authorized by the U.N.’s most powerful body since 2017. The resolution’s approval Friday by all 15 council nations demonstrated a rare sign that council members can work together. U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said a second resolution is being prepared to help restore security to the crisis-wracked Caribbean nation.
