Monterey County parents upset with schools handling of alleged school threat

North Monterey County High School is dealing with an alleged threat by a student at the school.

Rumors were spread on social media this weekend, speaking about a potential threat against the school, but those threats were found not to be credible.

“What we ended up having here was an extensive amount of rumors that were speaking to something that there were no facts to,” North Monterey County High School Principal Chandi Wood said.

The rumors were spread over the weekend by both parents and students on various social media platforms.

Some parents are upset they are only being informed by the school days later. They feel North Monterey County High School did not provide parents with enough information fast enough and fear their children could be in danger.

“If the schools are hiding this from us, what if something worse happens?” parent Silveria Navarro said.

“There are many safety issues that happen on a high school campus, I don’t think parents want to be notified every time there’s a concern,” Wood said.

Navarro’s daughter was one of multiple students who didn’t attend classes Monday because of the incident.

KION spoke to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and North Monterey County High School. Both the sheriffs office spokesperson, and the school principal say the threat was investigated and it was not credible.

“No credible information to show the student had a weapon, had an intention of getting a weapon,” Monterey County Sheriff Commander John Thornburg said.

This is the second “threat” reported to the County Sheriffs office from this high school in the past year. Neither have been found credible.
