UPDATE: Man killed during accident near Highway 101 northbound, police say
UPDATE 9/3/15 9:18 a.m.: Highway 101 is back open at San Miguel Canyon Road after lanes were closed for about two hours due to a deadly crash, according to CHP.
Officers said a man dressed in dark clothing was “ranting and raving” between the center divide and the fast lane south of Messick Rd.
Driver Misaelo Francisco, 34, from Soledad, was in a 2001 Honda Accord when officers said he hit the man on Highway 101. Officers said Francisco was not hurt and drugs or alcohol were not a factor.
Francisco told police he came around a curve, saw the man running in lanes and swerved in an attempt to avoid him, according to CHP.
UPDATE 9/3/15 7:35 a.m. The left lane of northbound Highway 101 at San Miguel Canyon Road has reopened. The right lane is still closed and the on-ramp for San Miguel Canyon Road is also closed.
UPDATE 9/3/15 7:30 a.m.: Both lanes of northbound Highway 101 at San Miguel Canyon Road are closed due to a fatal accident between a pedestrian and vehicle. The on-ramp for San Miguel Canyon Road is also closed.
The California Highway Patrol believes the incident first happened just after 5:30 Thursday morning, but crews are on-scene trying to learn a cause and other details about the accident.
Drivers commuting through this area should consider an alternate route and drive safe.
