UPDATE: Suspect in San Jose officer-involved shooting, shot by officer

UPDATE 3.26.15 5:45 P.M.: San Jose police report that based on their preliminary investigation, investigators have determined the fatal shot to the suspect was fired by Officer Doug Potwora #3506 who was one of the first officers on-scene. Officer Potwora is a 16 year veteran.

UPDATE 3/25/2015 12:55 p.m.: The San Jose Police Department is sharing a statement from family members of fallen Officer Michael Johnson.

Statement from the family of Officer Michael Johnson #3718:

“Last night Officer Michael Johnson of the San Jose Police Department was shot and killed while trying to help the community he loved. We are deeply saddened by his loss and cannot express in writing how deep a hole in our hearts we are left with by his passing.

We appreciate all of the thoughts and prayers we have received from the community, both near and far and take comfort in your sharing our pain and in your recognition that police officers lay it on the line day in and day out as they work to make the world a better place.

This is the statement the family intends to make and greatly appreciate having the space we need to allow our family to grieve and heal in private. We love you Mike our husband, son, brother, uncle and hero. Rest in peace.”

UPDATE 4:00 a.m.: Police confirmed the suspected gunman, 57-year-old Scott Dunham, is dead. Police say they found him deceased on his balcony when they made entry into his residence.

UPDATE: Early Wednesday morning police identified the slain officer as Michael Johnson. He was a 14-year veteran of the department.

A San Jose Police Officer is dead after an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night.

It happened on Senter Road at 6:48 p.m.

According to the San Jose Police Department, officers were responding to a report of an adult male with a gun threatening to kill himself and when officers got there they were met with gunfire.

A veteran officer was hit and died at the scene.

Police have the location surrounded as they search for the suspect.
