Making a Difference Santa Cruz Veterans
It’s been an eventful year for Marine Veteran Mitchell Horton. In the past 20 years Mitchell had no permanent place to call home. After his service ended, he struggled to find permanent work.
“A year ago I found myself homeless and unemployed. In my history, I’ve spent the nights on the streets. I know what it’s like not to have a roof over your head. I know what it’s like to be in crisis mode and not have any food, comfort or shelter” said Horton.
Unaware of potential services, Horton was forced to live life on the streets, until last year, when he came to Veterans Service Day in Santa Cruz.
Every Wednesday, Twenty First Century Vet provides a variety of services including a meal. Once a week, volunteers use donations dedicated to helping veterans.
“When someone comes in we offer them medical, assistance to file a claim, we guide them to housing, find jobs, help with bus fair If people need help we’re here, let them know they’re welcome and we’ll help them one way or another” says Volunteer Leslie Cone.
The goal is to offer assistance that is vital to giving homeless veterans, like Mitchell, tools to make a fresh start. An opportunity Mitchell says gives freedom back to those who earned it.
Together, these volunteers are making a difference by helping those who serve our country.
