Central Coasters react to impeachment of Donald Trump
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) With the House of Representatives voting in favor of impeachment against President Donald Trump on Wednesday, many in Salinas were thinking about what impact it would have in their lives.
"I think it was a positive impact in the community. He has made several mistakes that we all know about," said Marie Carmen Gonzalez, a Soledad resident.
"You want a government that serves the people. And the fact that we have a president that's being accused of serious crimes is a sad day regardless of what political leaning you have," said Cesar Cruz, an Oakland resident.
Cesar Cruz is a school teacher from Oakland visiting Salinas. He says there's nothing to celebrate, but impeachment was the right thing to do.
"I think it shows that no one is above the law, and that's important because for many years, at least the first couple of years of this president's presidency, it appeared that he was above the law," said Cruz.
But like Republicans in Congress, local Republican leaders argue this will end up hurting Democrats. They argue no laws were broken, so President Trump should remain in office.
"This is the United States of America. We are innocent until proven guilty," said Rob Bernosky, a member of the San Benito County Republican Party. "What the Democrats are trying to prove is that he is guilty until proven innocent."
