Pebble Beach Equestrian Center closing in June after 100 years in operation

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (KION-TV)- A piece of history on the Monterey Peninsula will soon be shutting their doors.

The Pebble Beach Company announced on Monday that they will be shutting down their Equestrian Center after operating for more than a century.

The center originally opened in 1924 after Samuel F.B. Morse wanted an area for homeowners who needed a stable for their horses.

Dick Collins took over the equestrian facilities in 1941. The 1960 U.S. Equestrian Team Trials were held at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center.

Pebble Beach Company CEO David Stivers said in a statement that keeping the center opening was no longer economically viable.

“The Center needs more than $15 million in renovations, and has been operating at a substantial loss for
many years. Given the overall downward trends in the equestrian industry and the continuing decrease in business at our Center, this is the right decision for the Company.’’

Pebble Beach Company CEO David Stivers said in a statement

Stivers said that employees who are currently working for the Equestrian Center will be offered a new role within the company.

The company said they currently have 60 horses at their stables with half of those horses privately owned. There are 15 full-time employees and five part-time employees who take care of the horses.

Stivers also said in a statement that they will offer rebates and other assistance to boarders to help facilitate the transition

Boarding services will continue to be offered at the center through June 30, 2024, which is
giving boarders four months to make arrangements.
